Jina Kleynhans

Child Psychologist Jina KleynhansB Soc Sci (Hons), M Clin Psych.

Jina Kleynhans is a registered and endorsed Clinical Psychologist, experienced in providing clinical psychology services across the lifespan, with a special interest in child and adolescent mental health.

A passionate belief that all children deserve the best start in life, motivated Jina to focus her practice on treating children. Although therapy is serious business, with children it also needs to be playful, and age-appropriate. Jina believes that while psychological techniques are important, they are ineffective without building a trusting relationship with the child first.

Child Psychology and Family Therapy

In addition to offering individual therapy with children, Jina also provides family therapy. Children are intimately connected to their family, their school, peers and the wider social system and research shows that working with the wider system facilitates change. She believes it is not that families need fixing; rather family therapy can be a powerful source of change precisely as a result of the strength within each family. When families find a way of working together to help one of their members, they can assist in overcoming obstacles they never thought possible.

Jina has worked with some of the most culturally diverse and socially disadvantaged children and families, as well as those from privileged backgrounds, in the course of her career. From experience, she can confidently state that all families have strengths, even those who have lost all hope and feel that they are powerless.

As part of her interest in working with children, Jina also enjoys working with parents to help them find loving and effective ways of handling the challenges of parenting. It was after having her own children and experiencing the inevitable struggles as a parent, that her passion for understanding the significance of attachment relationships emerged. She utilises attachment-informed, mindful parenting skills and knowledge daily in her own lif,e as well as professionally.

Jina has worked in many different environments, including within an employee assistance program, inpatient and outpatient adult services, community child and adolescent mental health as well as in private practice; and continues to provide clinical psychology services within child and youth mental health services.
